The bioinformatics partnering deal trend analysis 2009 to 2014 are reviewed in this article.

With continuous advancements in the field of information technology, computer science and software engineering, bioinformatics has gained tremendous growth in the field of applied biotechnology.

Bioinformatics is the application of computer science and information technology to the field of biology and medicine.

Bioinformatics deals with algorithms, databases and information systems, web technologies, artificial intelligence and soft computing, information and computation theory, software engineering, data mining, image processing, modeling and simulation, signal processing, discrete mathematics, control and system theory, circuit theory, and statistics, for generating new knowledge of biology and medicine, and improving & discovering new models of computation (e.g. DNA computing, neural computing, evolutionary computing, immuno-computing, swarm-computing, cellular-computing).

According to the Current Agreements life science deals and alliance database, around 1,500 bioinformatics partnering deals were made since 2009.

The following figure shows bioinformatics partnering frequency since 2009 to August 2014.

Within dealmaking, bioinformatics partnering has been fairly consistent with an average of 305 deals announced in the past five years.

In 2010, over 380 bioinformatics partnering deals were being reported, the highest for a single year.

According to the database Current Agreements, big pharma companies are quite active as are research tools or medical devices companies in signing deals involving bioinformatics assets. A recent example to cite here would be the deal where UCB awarded a $6.1 million in contract to Emerson Process Management to provide integrated process automation and operation management systems for a biopharmaceutical production center in Switzerland – see full deal at Current Agreements.

We have been able to gather the most active bioinformatics assets dealmakers, enabling one to identify and partner with the successful leader in this industry.

The therapy area where bioinformatics deals are mainly focused around is hospital care with around 229 deals. Hospitals require several software tools to monitor and test diagnosis and treatments and hence partners with academics and medical device companies.

Other therapeutic focus areas in bioinformatics partnering are in oncology, cardiovascular and CNS.
