NPS Pharmaceuticals is a global pharmaceutical company treating rare diseases specifically focusing upon gastrointestinal and endocrine disorders.
Gattex® as it’s known in the US or Revestive® in the EU is the company’s core marketed product, it is a injection for subcutaneous use for short bowel syndrome patients who are dependent on parenteral support. The company also has a secondary product in the pipeline called Natpara which is indicated for hyperparathyroidism and has been submitted to the FDA for approval. Natpara has been granted orphan status in the EU which was granted in the US back in 2007.
The name NPS stands for Natural Product Sciences, NPS Pharmaceuticals was established in 1986 by Doctors Hunter Jackson and Thomas Parks who at the time were researching the medical benefits of spider venom. This research although not very fruitful led to the company developing calcium channel blockers which in the following years attracted the attentions of big pharmaceutical company Pfizer. At this point the company’s profile had been officially raised so it decided to file for an IPO in 1994 which turned out to be a huge success for the company.
In 1999 the company acquired Allelix Pharmaceuticals in a move that would significantly expand its pool of budding scientists and add two key new products to its pipeline for osteoporosis and gastrointestinal disorders. this was the company's only major M&A to date.
By the early 2000’s the company employed over 100 people and was beginning to sign more licensing agreements for its own researched development products.
Today the company continues to develop new early stage candidates and it reaps the revenues from its successfully partnered products that are being licensed by companies such as Amgen, Nycomed and Ortho-McNeil.
This year in 2014 it celebrated 20 years since it first filed publicly on the stock exchange and it has been named as one of the top places to work in New Jersey by news journals.
Partnering to out-license
With a healthy pipeline of over 5 product candidates, NPS Pharmaceuticals will probably be expecting to partner these out to other companies who can take them to market in their respective countries. With the big pharma interest the company has had so far the new products will no doubt get this kind of interest too. See the section below on ways to contact NPS Pharmaceuticals.
