Biocon: Partnering activity 2009-2014

From an enzyme manufacturing company into a fully integrated biotechnology company, Biocon has emerged as a market leader with several different products and services. Biocon, established in India in 1978, is a joint venture between Biocon Biochemicals of Ireland and an entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar- Shaw.

The big biotech company follows a policy of collaborating with other companies for co-developing monoclonal antibodies, human insulin and their analogs and drug delivery systems based proteins.

The partnering activity of this growing company is reviewed in this article.

The following figure shows the level of Biocon partnering deal announcements since 2009. Although you can observe peaks and dips in the partnering activity, the company continues to bolster its product strength by partnering with big companies for different technology.

Analysis of the partnering deals shows a strong emphasis on partnerships in gastrointestinal, infectives and metabolic therapy areas. With a focus on bowel movement, Clostridium difficile and diabetes treatments, the company partners for products like biosmilars, novel molecules and drug delivery technologies.
