Biomarin has acquired a few companies in the last five years with its biggest acquisition being the purchase of $134 million of Zacharon Pharmaceuticals.

Biomarin is involved in M&A activity for growth in a similar strategy to its peers in the top biopharmaceutical companies. Biomarin has on occasions sought growth and expansion through strategic acquisitions, for example when acquiring Zystor and Zacharon; Biomarin acquired Zystor Therapeutics that was working on developing enzyme replacement therapies (ERT) for the treatment of lysosomal storage disorders. Similarly, Zacharon was working on treatments aimed at mucopolysaccharidosis disorders and also diseases such as Tay Sachs and Sandhoff.
