Personalized medicine in oncology: recent life science partnering trends

Scientists predict that the cure to cancer in the future lies in exploiting personalized medicine technology.

Personalized medicine proposes customization of healthcare – with medical decisions, practices, and/or products being tailored to the individual patient – such as by use of genetic or other information.

Personalized medicine can be sub-divided into three distinct areas where biopharmaceutical intervention is concerned:

  • Biomarkers
  • Companion diagnostics
  • Pharmacogenomics

Recent advances in biomarkers, pharmacogenomics, and companion diagnostics have increased partnering opportunities for pharmaceutical industries working on cancer drugs.

According to the Current Agreements life science deals and alliance database, around 600 personalized medicine in oncology partnering deals were made since 2007.

It is evident that partnering activity in this arena has increased significantly since 2007 and has gained popularity as an emerging and promising technology area.

Analysis of data from Current Agreements suggests that big pharma companies are fairly active in signing deals involving personalized medicine assets. Roche heads the big pharma dealmaking to date with 29 deals followed by Pfizer and Abbott.

The following figure shows personalized medicine in oncology deal making by stage of development.

It is observed that the vast majority or deals are made at the discovery stage showing promise in the development of this emerging technology.

As an emerging and exciting area for therapeutic intervention, personalized medicine deals in oncology making can have a high headline deal value.

Personalized medicine technology has been largely focused in developing newer treatment in the area of cancer. Below is a figure that shows the personalized medicine in oncology partnering activity with focus on individual oncology therapy areas. The most popular oncology partnering areas are breast, lung and prostate cancer.

The future of medicine points to personalized medicine and its advancements. Extensive research towards accurate and low cost biomarkers and companion diagnostics is underway, paving way for investment of knowledge and expertise in this field.
