The bioinformatics life science partnering deal trends 2007 to 2013 are reviewed in this article.

With continuous advancements in the field of information technology, computer science and software engineering, bioinformatics has gained tremendous growth in the field of applied biotechnology.

Bioinformatics is the application of computer science and information technology to the field of biology and medicine.

Bioinformatics deals with algorithms, databases and information systems, web technologies, artificial intelligence and soft computing, information and computation theory, software engineering, data mining, image processing, modeling and simulation, signal processing, discrete mathematics, control and system theory, circuit theory, and statistics, for generating new knowledge of biology and medicine, and improving & discovering new models of computation (e.g. DNA computing, neural computing, evolutionary computing, immuno-computing, swarm-computing, cellular-computing).

According to the Current Agreements life science deals and alliance database, around 1,700 bioinformatics partnering deals were made since 2007.

The following figure shows bioinformatics partnering frequency since 2007 to August 2013.

It is evident that partnering activity has increased significantly since 2007 with a peak in 2010 and is maintaining popularity. As we enter into the month of September, 2013 has already seen 137 bioinformatics partnering deals suggesting more to come this year and a level consistent with recent years.

According to the database Current Agreements, big pharma companies are quite active. as are research tools or medical devices companies in signing deals involving bioinformatics assets. A recent example to cite here would be the deal where UCB awarded a $6.1 million in contract to Emerson Process Management to provide integrated process automation and operation management systems for a biopharmaceutical production center in Switzerland – see full deal at Current Agreements.

The following figure shows bioinformatics deal making by stage of development. It is observed that the vast majority or deals are made at the discovery stage. This is consistent with bioinformatics tools being used in the process of drug discovery in order to optimize and/or enhance the discovery process.

The  Bioinformatics Partnering Terms and Agreements report published by Current Partnering provides full details of over 1700 bioinformatics deals announced since 2007 and includes average deal terms including headline, upfront, milestone and royalty rates, where available. In addition, the report provides details of deals broken down by deal type, stage of development, company A-Z and technology type. More details here

There is a huge expectation in the advancement and development of bioinformatics a. It would be interesting to witness the deal making activity and trends in this sector in the coming years.
