Medtech companies bank on EuroMedtech for financing and partnerships

Posted on 25 January 2010

In only its second year, EBD Group’s partnering event for the medical technology industry, EuroMedtech™, has become the premier destination for emerging innovator companies and start-ups to seek out and secure funding.

For these companies, EuroMedtech provides a unique opportunity to present to and meet with many potential strategic partners and qualified investors over a two-day period.

To be held at the Westin Hotel in Leipzig, Germany on June 1–2, EuroMedtech 2010 is expected to attract upwards of 30 leading venture capital firms, including Abingworth, Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners, Earlybird Venture Capital, Sofinnova, Warburg Pincus, and High-Tech Gründerfonds.

Based on the successful business outcomes generated at last year’s event, the stage is set for EuroMedtech 2010 to accelerate the business and partnering objectives of participating companies. One of the most common objectives for both public and private companies is funding.

Thom Rasche, Partner at Earlybird, said, “EuroMedtech is an exceptional event for medical technology firms seeking to move their business multiple steps forward. Whether forming a strategic partnership with a large medical company or raising fresh capital, EuroMedtech provides fertile grounds to achieve those objectives.” Rasche added, “By showcasing a critical mass of exciting, highly innovative companies EuroMedtech enables us to quickly identify a short list of potential investments. Based on our participation at last year’s event, we concluded two new lead investments. Furthermore, due to the very positive outcome we were delighted to have Marion Jung, principal at Earlybird join the advisory group of EuroMedtech.”

One of the recipients of the Earlybird funds, EBS Technologies GmbH of Kleinmachnow, recently closed on EUR 3 million to further its development of medical devices for the treatment of neurological deficits that result from stroke or brain trauma. Kornelia Sabel, CEO of EBS Technologies said that “EuroMedtech delivered as promised. We presented at the conference with the goal of raising capital from the impressive collection of participating medtech investors, as well as establishing important contacts with many future potential partners.”

“I can proudly say we achieved our goals at the 2009 event, and I look forward to establishing more vital contacts at EuroMedtech 2010 in Leipzig,” she added.

Another EuroMedtech 2009 presenting company, BMEYE B.V., the non-invasive cardiovascular monitoring company, raised EUR 6 million from Earlybird, 360 Capital Partners and prior investors as a result of their efforts at the conference. “Having an experienced medtech investor like Earlybird on board will support the accelerated growth program, focusing on further product introductions and sales development,” said Rob de Ree, BMEYE’s CEO. Michel Alvarez, CEO, Healionics Corporation, commented, “Euromedtech provided an opportunity for Healionics to introduce our novel biomaterial scaffold technology to European medtech players for the first time. We engaged with a select group of Venture Capital and R&D Partners and some of those contacts have blossomed into fruitful relationships today.”
