PanGenerika: A Gateway to Europe’s Pharmaceuticals Markets
Date of publication: June 6, 2009
PanGenerika (www.pan-generika.eu) is a company that was created and registered in the Netherlands in June 2007 with the intention of easing the burden on pharmaceutical companies that want to enter the European market. It is difficult to successfully launch products in all 27 countries in the European Union, especially for smaller companies. Language and cultural barriers are only part of the problem. Regulatory barriers, dossier and license fees, along with sales and marketing difficulties add to the burden, but PanGenerika has found a way to get around these problems.
Alliance of Small to Medium Sized Companies
PanGenerika’s structure is an alliance of small to medium sized companies from countries that accept EU CTD dossiers.
It began as a European alliance, but is quickly expanding to countries all over the world. Each member company has access to PanGenerika’s product list with no license or dossier fees, along with the buying power of a strong network of companies. On the other side, companies that wish to license their products to PanGenerika by adding their products to the list have easy access to all of the alliance with the possibility to sell in higher volumes through one company. In short, PanGenerika brings together licensees and licensors, maximizing profitability for all parties involved.
euroPLX: Business Platform for PanGenerika
Membership in PanGenerika is a three-year commitment, with a low annual membership fee. Services offered to members include: low supply prices, experienced regulatory backing, quarterly reviews of business opportunities, quarterly meetings between members for cross-licensing, free entry three times a year to euroPLX meetings, and a portfolio analysis for each company to choose specific products. Since the foundation of PanGenerika, euroPLX has been its business platform and PanGenerika has sponsored the traditional euroPLX networking dinner in Cascais, Portugal, last March.
An option agreement is available for companies that are interested in joining PanGenerika, but are not ready to make a commitment. This grants the company two months to decide whether to join, while their country is reserved for them. The fee is 10% of the membership fee, and if the company decides to join, this 10% is deducted from the final membership price.
Now 250 Products on PanGenerika’s Increasing List
Products are constantly being added to PanGenerika’s list. By the end of 2008, about 250 products were available for members to choose from. They are all in CTD or eCTD format, and about half of them are available to register immediately. Most of these products come from renowned dossier developers who see possibilities to launch their difficult generics through PanGenerika. The types of product offered include injectables, generic+ products, and products that need a sales force (i.e. transplant generics).
PanGenerika currently has members in about twelve countries in Europe as well as members in Africa and Asia. Membership is filling up quickly, and the alliance is constantly growing. The product list is also always growing. Manufacturers are very eager to add their products to the list, and the list is updated and distributed to members four times a year.
Partnered Packaging and Distribution Services
PanGenerika is partnered with PharmaPack B.V., a Dutch packaging and distribution company.
PharmaPack has the expertise and the know how to package, distribute, and do releases to countries around the world, based on each country’s regulations.
PanGenerika members buy products in bulk and PharmaPack efficiently handles the packaging and distribution among members.
In summary, PanGenerika is a strategic opportunity for small pharmaceutical companies that wish to enter a larger market. This alliance offers support in marketing, development, packaging, product selection, distribution, and much more. It’s also a great opportunity for companies that wish to license their products throughout Europe and other areas of the world. Through PanGenerika, licensors have one gateway to a large distribution network, avoiding a high number of distributors and avoiding low volumes in each country.
