Happy new year to all your dealmakers out there and welcome to this month's edition of the Dealmakers newsletter.
Pfizer have hit the ground running in 2008 with deals announced with Tacere, Taisho and Genomic Health in the first week of January, but this has been overshadowed by the first dig dollar deal of the year between Merck and Addex in a stomping in $700M schizophrenia deal.
2008 is forecast by many to be a year when biotech will be pursued by bigpharma and several significant M&A transactions are predicted. As the year progresses we will be keeping tabs with our Scorecards to keep you posted on the best dollar value deals.

DEALMAKING REVIEW 2007
2007 was another significant year for dealmaking in the biopharma sector.
The year saw over 2,100 deals announced, with the top twenty partnering deals having a combined headline value of $21.8bn. GlaxoSmithKline was the primary mover with six of the top twenty with a combined headline value of $6.8bn. To read about 2007's top twenty partnering deals view our Partnering Scorecard.
The year also saw a significant amount of M&A activity, with over 300 deals announced during the year. The top twenty M&A deals had a combined value of $92bn.
